What is Mentorship Matters?
Mentorship Matters is a pro-bono initiative launched by Barrister Mian Sheraz Javaid for helping diverse factions, such as aspiring lawyers, engineers, Ciarb Members, and Ciarb Fellows craft their career pathway.
This program launches from the first of July 2025 and will run up until end of December 2025.
How to choose your Group?
Aspiring Arbitrators
- You’re in the early stages of your professional journey — perhaps recently graduated or newly practicing.
- You have an interest in arbitration and ADR but are still exploring how to break into the field.
- You’re looking to understand the fundamentals: drafting clauses, understanding timelines, and choosing mentors.
- You may be a junior lawyer, researcher, or corporate professional seeking first-hand exposure to arbitration practice
- This track helps you build foundational skills and start shaping a clear pathway toward your first arbitration case.
Ciarb Members or Equivalent Experience
- You already have practical experience in ADR — as legal counsel, mediator, or through handling disputes in a specific industry.
- You're at a stage equivalent to a CIArb Member — perhaps a litigator or in-house counsel now looking to diversify into arbitration.
- You want deeper, hands-on experience — shadowing arbitrators, case managing, and beginning to build your presence.
- This group is for professionals seeking to transition into arbitration roles, such as tribunal secretary or arbitrator.
- You’ll work on positioning yourself strategically, refining your profile, and engaging with the arbitration market at a higher level.
Ciarb Fellow or Equivalent
- You’re a seasoned professional with significant experience in law, finance, construction, or policy.
- You’ve likely handled or advised on major disputes — but are now ready to step into your first arbitration appointment.
- You’re looking to bridge the gap between knowledge and visibility — through pro bono roles, speaking engagements, and publishing.
- This track focuses on high-level strategy, helping you craft an arbitrator CV, get empanelled, and identify your market niche.
- It’s ideal for those aiming to transition from senior industry roles into recognized arbitrator positions.
Engineers & Technical Experts
- You’re an engineer, architect, quantity surveyor, or industry expert with growing interest in ADR.
- You often deal with disputes but now want to formally add arbitration to your skillset.
- You’ll learn about FIDIC contracts, dispute boards, and how to become dual-specialized in your field and ADR.
- This track is tailored for technical professionals who want to move toward arbitrator roles in construction, infrastructure, or energy sectors.
- You’ll build a relevant profile, gain certifications, and position yourself for cross-functional growth in ADR.
“I’ve walked the long road—switching careers, facing uncertainty, and breaking into the international disputes marketplace without a map. I know what it takes, and I know how much time it can cost you if you try to do it without a mentor.
That’s why I created this mentorship program: to give you what I didn’t have—direct guidance, valuable introductions, meaningful referrals, strategic shortcuts, and honest insights—so you can reach global platforms faster and with purpose.
This is my way of giving back and lifting others as I continue to grow.”
